The Orbital Drilling Concept
Novator’s patented Orbital Drilling™ technology is based on rotating a cutting tool around its own axis and simultaneously about a centre axis which is off-set from the axis of the cutting tool. The cutting tool can then be moved simultaneously in an axial direction to drill or machine a hole – and/or combined with an arbitrary sidewards motion to machine an opening or cavity.
By adjusting the off-set, a cutting tool of a specific diameter can be used to drill holes of different diameters as illustrated. This implies that the cutting tool inventory can be substantially reduced.
The current family of products can be divided into two groups: Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC-controlled) Orbital Drilling units, with a programmable variation of offset/eccentricity; and Programmable Logical Unit Controlled (PLC-controlled) Orbital Drilling units, with a manually adjusted off-set/eccentricity.
Orbital Drilling™ units with CNC-controlled off-set, can define and optimize the drilling process in an infinite number of ways. This makes it possible to e.g. drill a complex shaped hole and perform finishing operations using the same straight diameter tool and set-up. The flexibility of controllable off-set drilling is illustrated below.
